Purpose: This study aimed at comparing the level of children¡¯s beliefs about parental divorce, environmental change after parental divorce, and social support as well as identifying the gender differences in affecting factors of children¡¯s beliefs about parental divorce.
Methods: Data was collected from 219 (M=100, F=119) children in Seoul, Korea, using Beliefs about Parental Divorce Scale, Environmental Change after Parental Divorce Scale, and Social Support Scale. Data was analyzed by descriptive statistics, Chi-square, t-test, and multiple regression analysis.
Results:The level of children¡¯s beliefs about parental divorce, environmental change after parental divorce and social support was significantly different between gender. Factors affecting children¡¯s beliefs about parental divorce were statistically different according to gender. For boys, changes in daily life alone significantly explained their beliefs about parental divorce (R2=.180, p<.001). For girls, family support, change of daily life, friends¡¯ support, and economic change significantly explained their beliefs about parental divorce (R2=.464, p<.001).
Conclusion: Nurses working with children in divorced families should include the affecting factors in beliefs about parental divorce by children¡¯s gender in their nursing plan.
